We’ve been working on getting a low-friction recording setup started in our practice space, and it seems like we’re finally there. 16 tracks of digital in, with drum mics always in place. The goal is to be able to start tracking quality takes with almost zero setup while we’re practicing, for songwriting and reference purposes.

We had our first session trying it out a couple of weeks ago, and it seems to be running pretty smoothly! Nothing we want to share yet, but a huge upgrade from our previous method (getting out a phone and firing up Voice Memos).

I’m not sure what we’ll end up writing on this site, or how often - show announcements, random news, idle thoughts? But it’s nice to have a single spot that we own and operate, instead of relying on the algorithmic wasteland of social media to communicate.

November Update

It’s been a little over a year since our last show. We’ve been keeping busy writing new material, and getting our demo recording situation set up, so it’s not like we’ve been idle. But we do miss playing live. The constantly shifting Covid landscape has been the biggest obstacle, but we’re also seeing a lot of turnover in active bands and available venues. Reliable favorites like the Victory Lounge are disappearing, while promising new spots like the Cherry Pit are getting on their feet. Whenever we get back to active performing, it’s going to feel like a whole new scene.

We were planning to host an invite-only house show last weekend with a couple of new bands, both made up of old friends. Unfortunately, that was derailed by Covid and other sicknesses. Hopefully we’ll be able to reschedule, and have something to look forward to over the winter. We won’t be promoting it online, but we’ll probably have some photos and video to share when it comes together. Hope you stick around to check that out when it finally happens.

In the Basement

Back in January, we invited over a few friends and had a grand ol’ time playing some loud music in our own basement.

Our friends from down the street, The Pissing Match, played their first show. We played a few newer songs, and X-Eyes rounded out the night with a quick set to close us out. We invited over one guest per band member, threw a bag of chips on a table next to a mini-fridge full of cheap beer and canned water, and surprisingly didn’t get a single complaint from the neighbors.

It wasn’t a public show in a real venue, but it was the most fun we’ve had in ages. We’re still considering when and how to start playing out again, but this felt like a step in the right direction.

Oh, and maybe we’ll release some of the video....

Out of Hibernation

When we made this site, we weren’t really planning on it only updating every six months. But we definitely went through a stretch of not having much to talk about for the first part of this year.

But we’ve hit the point where roughly 5 of 8 new songs are ready, 1 more is ready to play but needs new lyrics, and 2 are maybe 50% there. Which I think is our goal for the long-fabled and very overdue LP2.

We also decided to start actively looking for some show opportunities. So maybe we’ll have an update on that sooner rather than later. Just stretching our limbs and coming out of hibernation (do bobcats hibernate? No, they do not) but even that feels pretty good.

Three Years Later

Almost three years ago, I wrote an update about how we were finally coming back from an extended pandemic-era absence. I wasn’t expecting us to deal with multiple health crises, vehicle accidents, and other circumstances that would keep us away from playing live.

So, here I am with another update, and concrete information! Even though we’ve been away from the public eye, not playing shows and letting our social media presence go dark, we have been active. It’s been a struggle to consistently arrange practices, but we kept coming back to it and making slow, slow progress on a new batch of songs.

We’re finalizing a couple of songs and figuring out how to go about recording the whole batch for LP2, whether that’s at our very own Cosmodrome studio in the basement, or at another location, we hope to make that happen this year.

And in more concrete news, there’s a real Bobcat show coming up. June 20th at one of our favorite spots, Lucky Liquor, with Tyler’s new band Bribed and our past show-mates and friends Three Fingers.
